Vice-President’s Message:
By Ed Kelleher

Our April program is a presentation by Chris Parsons, a noted Northern California Guide who guides for The Fly Shop. The title of the presentation is: "Fly Fishing the Fall River - Secrets of a Fanatic"

Chris Parsons began guiding for The Fly Shop in 2003, and things at The Fly Shop have never been the same since. Chris' positive attitude and hard-working demeanor sets the bar high for any guide, anywhere. He's also a patient instructor, certified by the Federation of Fly Fishers, who likes to work with anglers of all skill levels.

Chris specializes in chasing steelhead and trophy trout on Northern California local rivers and lakes. He'll fish anywhere there's water, but especially enjoys the Fall River, Lower Sacramento, and Trinity Rivers.

Chris is one of our favorite Nor Cal guides, and Sawmill Tom may try to adopt Chris after this June. His can do attitude might be reflected by the time that Sawmill Tom and his trouble making friend had to send Chris home from a day on the river because he was so sick he could barely row. He finished the snowy day anyway, and we caught fish. You can learn more about Chris at his website: http://www.bethefly.com./about.html

The presentation will be at the Sally Judd Griffith Senior Center, 700 Jewell Ave, Pacific Grove. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM, and the presentation will begin about 7:30 PM. The public is welcome, and there is no charge for admission. "

Please try to submit your information by the 20th of the month preceding the publication month. I’ll try to get everything into the newsletter, even if I get it after the 20th, but the sooner I get it the more likely it is to make it into the next edition.

Newsletter comments:
Unfortunately, many are not able to open the files I attach in the e-mail distributions. Sorry about that. I will try to copy the newsletters directly into the e-mail, but some of the formatting will be lost. It will be best to view the newsletter here on the web site if & when you can. Also, I already have a working version of the next newsletter uploaded...so you can see in advance what is coming..and I update it real time as I get new information...

***************************************************************
The web site:
If you have any ideas for other things you would like to see on the club web site, please let me know. I’ll admit that I am by no means a web developer guru. I am using a simple program with my Mac that builds all the code for me, and the program is limited in what is it capable of doing.

***************************************************************
Library:
How many people know we have a pretty good Library? That’s right. Apparently this was a good discussion at the Feb Board meeting. Go here to see a listing of what the club has... We’ll be improving the information there soon with reviews from other club members! Check back often, and check something out and write your own review and share your thoughts with other club members.

What is that ‘sheep skin’ you see on the raffle table at the club meetings?
Answer: It’s a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, members donate flies to it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January.

The fly collection is growing, but we still need loads more. I encourage you all to donate some each month, even if it’s only 1 or 2. Just think what a nice collection we would have by the time the annual raffle rolls around!

Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece.

The MPFC Club Monthly Meeting:

When:
The Monterey Peninsula Flycasters Club (MPFC) meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at 7PM.

Where:
Remember, this month’s meeting will NOT be at the regular spot. Instead, we will be meeting at the Sally Judd Griffin Senior Center, the Health and Fitness Room!

What goes on at the meeting?
We have presenters when the club budget allows.

We also have a monthly raffle where you could win flies, fly lines, articles of clothing, leaders, tippet materials, etc, and sometimes even a brand new fly rod (one can never have enough fly rods!, I know I can’t). The money collected from the raffle is used to cover club expenses such as program speakers, and future raffle prizes...so buy lots of raffle tickets and support the club and help Ed bring in more speakers!.

Board of Directors Meeting:

The Board of Directors meeting starts at 6:30, 30 minutes prior to the general meeting, every month, at the same location.

All members are invited and welcome.

News:
Howdy!

Here's what's going on around the shop and beyond:

Sage Basic Spey Clinic date correction…
I made an error…no, really, I did.  The Sage Basic Spey Clinic is not on April 25 but on May 22.  There are a few spots remaining so do let me know if you or someone you know is interested.

Sage Trout School canceled…
Bill Lowe scheduled the Sage Trout School for May 9th…Mother's Day…and we all know how well that will go over at home should you forsake mom's special day to learn how to torture fish.  However, our upcoming 1-day Introduction to Fly Fishing, April 11th, still has some open spots and mom won't be peeved if you make that one.

Blood drive results…
Well, let's just say that with the lowest turnout we've ever had, I doubt we'll be doing it again anytime soon.  My thanks to the five donors who did show up.

Surf clinic next week…
Assuming the weather cooperates, our first surf clinic is next week on April 7, 9 and 10.  Learn how to read the surf to locate holding areas for fish, double hauling and shooting line, the essential knots and flies, how to fish safely and where you fit in the food chain should you wade too deep.  The 10th is the morning field trip to one of the local beaches.  Surf fishing is available all year long.  We have miles of great beaches to fish from so why not take advantage of the opportunities?

Trout season is just around the corner…
April 24th is the opening day of trout season on the upper Carmel and Arroyo Seco Rivers (there might be a few other places to check out if you take the time to do some investigating).  Los Padres Reservoir will open then…a strong hint to a few of you who have been fishing it lately…and it's not a bad fishery if you have the equipment and the time to fish it well.

The there's bass and sunfish…
As the weather warms up more, bass and sunfish will become friskier.  Look into Fort Hunter Liggett, Lake San Antonio and Nacimiento and the various reservoirs in the Santa Clara and Central Valley for bassin' fun.  Bass fishing requires good casting skills…think of it as target shooting with a fly rod.  If you're interested in fishing the Delta but don't have a boat or a clue on how to go about it, consider hiring Kevin Doran for a day.  Go to http://www.deltaadventures.com/Home.html for more information on his services.

Deals…
Bring in this email and get the following deals:
·	A free bottle of Revivex spray-on water repellent with the purchase of a Simms wader or wading jacket.
·	If you need some new Simms wading boots with the StreamTread sole, bring in your old pair of felt-soled boots and get $20.00 off your new boots.
·	Order an Outcast "Fat Cat" float tube, booties and fins and get a free double action hand pump.
·	Buy 24 flies not already marked down and get a free bottle of Loon Fly Spritz.

My chocolate bunny needs to have its ear devoured so that's it for this week.

Have a glorious holiday weekend!

Geoff Malloway
