Monterey Peninsula Flycasters’ April 2009 NEWSLETTER

President John Weber’s Message:

Our April 7 meeting will be very special.  We will have a guest speaker who will show us how to catch halibut in the surf with flies! The fly fishing ladies will join us also.  That in its self should be motivation enough to get you to attend.  We will meet at the same time and same place.  See you there.

My new hip has to pain and my legs are getting stronger. Hopefully I'll be able to wade for some big trout this summer.

Tight lines,
John Weber

Robert Ketley will give a presentation on “Fly Fishing the Surf in Monterey Bay” Rob is a well known Central Coast fly fisher and innovator. A biologist by education, and a Water Quality Engineer by profession, Rob has published widely on the subject of fishing in the surf, casting and fly design. Working with Lee Haskin, he scientifically analyzed the way in which topwater flies create underwater sound which led to the design of Lee’s Sub Zero 85 decibel fly for stripers and other predators. He is a successful angler for halibut with the fly, and will discuss his method of achieving that success.

And…
BELIZE FLY FISHING ADVENTURE
8 Days / 7 Nights
Dec 5-12, 2009                                                                               $ 2995 per person

The tropical breezes and beach-front cabanas of Turneffe Atoll await you!
Belize! What better place to spend a week during one of the coldest months of the year? Right! Just off the coast of Belize is Turneffe Island.  It is one of the largest coral atolls in the Atlantic and part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world. Turneffe (“Turn-if”) is also one of the top saltwater fly fishing destinations where the warm (75-80 degrees!) shallow waters of the reef are home to the prime objective of our adventure, Albula vulpes, the Pacific Bonefish. In fact, Belize is widely known as the “bonefish capitol of the world.” And on Turneffe Atoll, large schools of bonefish (often over 100 fish!) cruise over the shallow inner reef, the “flats,” foraging for shrimp, crabs and other tasty morsels in their diet. The thrilling adventure of learning to spot, approach, catch and land these “torpedoes of the reef” is why we’re here!  Believe us, when you hook your first bonefish, you’ll understand why we use the term “thrilling.” But Turneffe Flats is famous for more than just bonefish;  it is one of the few places in the world where opportunities abound for anglers to bag the elusive “Grand Slam,” landing a bonefish, a tarpon, and a permit – all in a single day. Now you understand why we’ve selected Turneffe Flats for this one of a kind Red’s Fly Shop saltwater fly fishing adventure!

Accommodations at Turneffe are spacious and comfortable.  Each guest cabin has a private veranda with an incredible ocean view - a perfect setting for your morning coffee. (LEFT) Blue sky, sunshine, shorts, sandals, and FISH ON!!!

Your hosts for this one-of-a-kind fly fishing adventure are two of Red’s key staff: Doug Pendleton, Head Instructor, and Nanci Lambert, Travel Coordinator. As a former marine biologist in Hawaii, Doug is uniquely qualified to lead this tropical fly fishing adventure.   Nanci is a seasoned fly angler and a professional travel manager, so you know your travel arrangements will be seamless (check our Doug and Nanci’s backgrounds at “Guides” at www.redsflyshop.com).

“Come join us for the tropical fly fishing adventure of a lifetime!”

Hunting Bonefish under the watchful eye of a Belizean guide is a sure formula for success!!

Home for the week is Turneffe Flats Resort, a renowned fly fishing and diving resort located right on the beach. The heart of the resort is the Main Lodge and dining room where anglers gather at the beginning and end of each day for family-style meals.  Hors d’oeuvres are served at happy hour, where happy anglers gather after each day’s adventure to share your successful catch stories and a few of “the ones that got away!” Happy hour transitions into a delicious dinner: featuring lobster, fresh snapper and other mouth-watering entrées – all fresh and prepared and on-site each day. Accommodations are in separate spacious beach-front cabanas or in tropical villas – all air-conditioned, beautifully decorated with their own veranda, and all with incredible views of the reef.

Throughout the week, the focus will be on fly fishing. In Doug’s bonefish seminars, you’ll learn about the reef environment and why bonefish live there; you’ll learn what bonefish eat and then head out on the reef with Belizean guides to find and identify the critters bonefish are searching for so you can “match the hatch” with the right fly. You’ll learn what the guides are looking for when they search for bonefish on the flats, and how to spot them yourself. In casting seminars, you’ll work on your casting stroke so you can deliver the fly across the flats to cruising bonefish with the right presentation. And of course, you’ll have lots of opportunity to go bonefishing with an experienced Belizean guide and become the best bonefish fly fisher you can be!

The average Rainbow trout takes off at 5 mph when hooked, a Bonefish like the one Craig is holding (RIGHT), can speed away at over 20 mph!  You also see lots of sea life including turtles, manatee, and even eagle rays! (LEFT)

But Turneffe Flats and this adventure isn’t JUST about bonefishing. We take time to experience some of the other natural wonders Turneffe has to offer: snorkeling over the reef, beachcombing, a night hunt for crocodiles, a day hunt for manatee and giant eagle rays, bird watching (there are over 80 species of birds found on Turneffe!).   Or maybe, just hang out on the white-sand beach with a good book.

We invite you to join us on this exclusive week-long introduction to saltwater fly fishing adventure. Virtually everything is included! Just bring your comfortable island wear and a spirit of adventure. And to whet your tropical appetite, with confirmation Red’s will send you a complementary Red’s-logo Simms fly fishing shirt to wear during your adventure, along with a detailed packing list and itinerary.

Space is limited and we expect this course to fill quickly, so we urge you to call Nanci today to reserve your space!

Upcoming Fishing Trips & Dates:

Pyramid Lake dates: March 26, 27, 28 Thurs, Fri. & Sat. fish 2 1/2 days.
From Doug Leach:
I believe all trailer spaces are taken but members can still go and stay in Reno or where ever and still fish with the club. I only have one trailer, which sleeps 5 people, so far, we have Leonard, myself and Tracy going, so we have two openings at this time. Anybody else who comes, would have to get rooms in Reno, because everything is booked at Pyramid during that time. We will leave very early Thursday morning, and be fishing Thursday pm. So you get two and a half days of fishing, come home on Sun. Anybody who wants to go, should call me, ASAP!

Gone but not forgotten:
On a somber note........."g"  Gallatin Powers, one of our Sacramento river trip fly fishermen passed away last week.  A heart attack took him from us.  I’m sure we will remember his great attitude and solid meaningful laugh, whether or not he was catching fish!
