Monterey Peninsula Flycasters’ August 2009 NEWSLETTER  The July Meeting - Dinner at Gianni’s President’s Message: By John Weber Our July 7 meeting was held at Gianni's Pizza.  Only eleven members showed up.  Too bad, the pizza was on the club.  The discussion between me and the board members present was about what the program for the August 4 meeting would be.  It was decided that Tom would bring the projector and we would play DVD's brought by members. I'll bring one on the Galapagos Islands.  We all began to file out around 9:00 p.m.  Look forward to seeing you there. Alan Bienenfeld will be hosting his annual fly casting clinic on August 9th, at Veteran’s Park, starting at 4PM. Come join us, work on your casting, get some tips and try casting some different rods. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* Vice-President’s Message: "The program for the August meeting will be a DVD showing as agreed to by pizza satiated members at the July meeting. Jay Murakoshi's "Bass Blast Vol 1" is the lead contender, provided a playable copy arrives on or before 4 Aug.  As an alternate, attempts are being made to procure a "Rivers of the Lost Coast" DVD. If neither pans out, maybe we'll have a showing of "Tying and Fishing Caddisflies". I’ll admit that I am by no means a web developer guru. Answer: It’s a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, members donate flies to it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January. The fly collection is growing, but we still need loads more. I encourage you all to donate some each month, even if it’s only 1 or 2. Just think what a nice collection we would have by the time the annual raffle rolls around! Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* The MPFC Club Monthly Meeting: When: The Monterey Peninsula Flycasters Club (MPFC) meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at 7PM. Where: The meetings are held at the Waste Water Management Facility located at: 3945 Rio Road Carmel, CA 93923 Directions: Coming down Highway 1, turn left onto Rio Road, proceed past the shopping centers and the post office. The building is about one half block past the Post Office and Rancho Road. The driveway is on the left and the parking lot is in the rear. See the map below. What goes on at the meeting? We have presenters when the club budget allows. At the April meeting we had an awesome program about fishing in the surf presented by Robert Ketley. The presentation was very well received. In May, our very own VP, Ed Kelleher presented a program on CA Heritage Trout. We also have a monthly raffle where you could win flies, fly lines, articles of clothing, leaders, tippet materials, etc, and sometimes even a brand new fly rod (one can never have enough fly rods!, I know I can’t). The money collected from the raffle is used to cover club expenses such as program speakers, and future raffle prizes...so buy lots of raffle tickets and support the club and help Ed bring in more speakers!. Board of Directors Meeting: The Board of Directors meeting starts at 6:30, 30 minutes prior to the general meeting, every month, at the same location. All members are invited and welcome. ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* Fishing Reports: Lower Sac Report by Alan Bienenfeld Bruce and I fished lower in the river the first day.  Trout and a couple steelies to 18 ".  Trout averaged 16" the first day.  Day 2 we averaged ~17" trout.  2 salmon (a 1.5 incher and one ~34" and 25 lbs) also one steelie.  Birds nests were the order of the day supported with the rubber legs and micro mayflies.  Best technique was to hold the boat on anchor and cast the riffles edges with a drag free drift.  A couple doubles and several 2 and 3 in a row!  The river is at 12,000 and literally green bank to green bank with lots of sweepers on the edges.  A bald eagle and multiple osprey cooled themselves in the water 'cause it was hot, 105+ the first day and ~99 the second with a few breezes to save our bacon.  We were drinking machines all day.  We had a great time. Here’s why...  Bill and his wife were fishing the Roaring Fork. OK Bill, we forgive you... :) ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* Lower Sac Fishout Update: The fall Lower Sac River trip scheduled for October 26, 27 & 28 is filled!  9 guides are reserved for each of three days.  Some new members filled the last spots.  Thanks to all for the effort.   Alan plans to have a casting/terminology event at the veterans park later this summer.  See note at the top of this newsletter.
