President John Weber’s Message:
Our annual dinner was big hit.  Tom played the slide show while were eating and repeated those asked for by the group. Great job Tom.  The raffle was a huge success, thanks to Bill Lauster and Koney Eng.  Dena had the beef and thought it was very good.  I had the Halibut and it was done to perfection.  About thirty members and their wives were present.  A good time was had by all.

Our February meeting will be held on the third at the regular time and place.  I think Ed will review presenters for 2009.  We are salivating at the possibility of getting a presenter from the Santa Cruz club after they make a presentation there.

My new hip is breaking in nicely.  Vince Torres and I are now walking on bionic hips.  There is no pain there anymore.   For me, I just have to get the muscles back in shape.

Tight Lines, John Weber

President’s Award!
This year, our President Extraordinaire was presented with a beautiful picture, see below. Thanks for being President for life John!

And a BIG thanks to Doug Chandler for organizing the event.

Meeting Location & Time: Tues. February 3rd
7 PM at the Carmel /Area Wastewater District:
The Waste Water Management Facility is at 3945 Rio Road.

Directions: Coming down Highway 1, turn left onto Rio Road, proceed past the shopping centers and the post office. The building is about one half block past the Post office and Rancho Road. The driveway is on the left and the parking lot is in the rear.

The Program:
The program at the February meeting, 2 Feb 2009, will consist of fishing reports. Tom Pelikan will report on a recent trip to the Trinity, guided by Chris Parsons of The Fly Shop, Ed Kelleher will report on a recent trip to the Klamath, guided by Craig Nielsen of Shasta Trout and John Rickard  of  Wild Waters Fly Fishing.    If Dan Wolf gets back from fishing the Delta in time [doubtful!], he will report on a recent trip guided by Chris King of Sac River Outfitters.

Future presentations include Surf Fishing with Rob Ketley, in April, not to be missed if  you fish or want to fish the surf.  Rob's specialty is catching Halibut on flies, in the surf.

Slainte'

Other ideas are welcome and solicited.
Ed Kelleher, VP

Trinity River Report:
Fished Trinity with Tom Pelikan Mon 26 Jan and Tues 27 Jan. Guided by Chris Parsons. The T has reverted to the days when a few hookups was a good day, a fish was a darn good day, and multiple fish was exceptional. Based not just on our trips but on chatting with other guides and clients. The Mountain Valley Grill is now closed from after Monday lunch to Wednesday morning, due to lack of customers and cooks.  Monday we ate dinner at The Grange in Weaverville. Highly recommended. The only reason NOT to go there every night is a half hour drive from Lewiston, and it costs more. Tom had Bison meat loaf and I had braised lamb shanks. Both were excellent. Wednesday AM we had breakfast at Marino’s Pizza and Steakhouse, again in Weaverville. It is on the south side of 299 just across from the shopping mall that has the Tops grocery in it.  We ate Tuesday Dinner at The Grange again, and convinced Chris Parsons to join us, by offering to buy his dinner. He and I had the Chicken Enchiladas, which were again excellent – much better than most Mexican restaurants, IMNPHO. Tom had the Early Bird Special, Swiss Steak on Egg Noodles, which he said was also excellent. They have a pretty nice looking dessert menu, but we were always too full to try it out, even sharing a dessert.

Monday. Pretty cold. New Balaclava worked well. Floated Bucktail to Indian Creek.  On the water by about 0915.  Morning Tom in front, me in back. Tom got a nice brown in the morning, and I got a nice wild adult buck steelhead. After lunch was very slow, I got a down-streamer hatchery hen – nice fish when it was fresher, I bet. Did not fight too well, but I got a picture anyway.  Got pretty cold about 1600, and stayed that way until we got off the river. All three fish were on bugs, golden stones, I think. (Solitude Stone, which is a Mercer biot golden stone with black and white striped rubber legs.)

Tuesday: Colder in the morning than Monday, but not as cold in the afternoon. We floated Evans Bar to Lime Point. Tom fished the riffle right in Evans Bar while Chris and I ran the shuttle, and hooked a steelie, fought it for a bit, then lost it.  Again, the morning was more productive than the afternoon. I hooked up a nice fish right away, and fought it for a couple of minutes. Got a couple of looks at it, but never got it close to the net. The hook finally pulled out, or got spit out. Tom got a decent adult hatchery fish. Shortly after that I hooked a fish briefly, and lost it, then Tom hooked one and lost it, Shortly before noon, I hooked up again, and this felt like a good fish. I played it very carefully, with good coaching from Chris Parsons, and brought it to the net after a long fight – it jumped at least three times, the last time only about twenty feet from the boat, which really had me worried. The fish was longer than thirty inches*, and [I think] is the biggest steelhead, and therefore, the biggest trout I have ever caught.
It was a great trip. Chris Parsons is a really good guide, who gives you just enough guidance to catch fish.
 * per the guide and comparative measurements in the photo of  known sizes.

Upcoming Fishing Trips & Dates:

Pyramid Lake dates: March 26, 27, 28 Thurs, Fri. & Sat. fish 2 1/2 days.
From Doug Leach:
I believe all trailer spaces are taken but members can still go and stay in Reno or where ever and still fish with the club. I only have one trailer, which sleeps 5 people, so far, we have Leonard, myself and Tracy going, so we have two openings at this time. Anybody else who comes, would have to get rooms in Reno, because everything is booked at Pyramid during that time. We will leave very early Thursday morning, and be fishing Thursday pm. So you get two and a half days of fishing, come home on Sun. Anybody who wants to go, should call me, ASAP!

Oct 2009 Lower Sac Trip:
I just set up the fall trip on the Lower Sac.  The fishing dates are October 26th, 27th, and 28th.  I have held 7 guides and plan on a group of 14 flyfishers.  First come, first fish as always.  Deposits welcome if you want a space for sure.

Gone but not forgotten:
On a somber note........."g"  Gallatin Powers, one of our Sacramento river trip fly fishermen passed away last week.  A heart attack took him from us.  I’m sure we will remember his great attitude and solid meaningful laugh, whether or not he was catching fish!
