Monterey Peninsula Flycasters’ July 2009 NEWSLETTER

Lupin (sometimes spelled Lupine) in bloom at Roostercomb Ranch

President’s Message:
By John Weber

Our June meeting was well attended.  We had more than a dozen show up.  The first month of summer usually has a very light turnout. Tom brought his computer and projector and we had fun reviewing our outings and pictures of prominent members with smiling faces and nice sized fish.  Bill had the raffle prizes in the car and when enough were present he brought in the goodies and we had a raffle to end the meeting.

Our July meeting will be held at Gianni’s Pizza. See directions in the ‘Club Meetings’ section of the newsletter below...

The Pizza is on the club, but members are responsible for their own drinks.

Look forward to seeing you all at Gianni’s on July 7.

Tight lines, John Weber

Newsletter comments:
Unfortunately, many are not able to open the files I attach in the e-mail distributions. Sorry about that. I will try to copy the newsletters directly into the e-mail, but some of the formatting will be lost. It will be best to view the newsletter here on the web site if & when you can. Also, I already have a working version of the next newsletter uploaded...so you can see in advance what is coming..and I update it real time as I get new information...

The web site:
If you have any ideas for other things you would like to see on the club web site, please let me know. I’ll admit that I am by no means a web developer guru. I am using a simple program with my Mac that builds all the code for me, and the program is limited in what is it capable of doing.

Check out the new recipe for Chicken Picatta.

What was that ‘skin’ you see on the raffle table at the club meetings?
Answer: It’s a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, members donate flies to it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January.

The fly collection is growing, but we still need loads more. I encourage you all to donate some each month, even if it’s only 1 or 2. Just think what a nice collection we would have by the time the annual raffle rolls around!

Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece.

Fishing Reports:

Diamond Lake Report
by Doug Leach

My son and I took a trip to the OR a week ago to fish for Rainbows at Diamond Lake. On Tuesday and must have landed about 80 fish. There was a light mayfly hatch coming off, it was incredible. It was great fishing. We landed fish from 16” to 26”. But the next day, the weather changed. It got cool and turned off the fish. Fishing slowly went down hill the rest of the week. On Friday we landed only one fish. It is a beautiful lake & the camp grounds are awesome. I highly recommend it!

O’Neil Forebay Report
by Rabbi Bruce

Alan Bienenfeld and I spent a very windy half day at the forebay, fighting the wind and between us only caught 4 fish, 3 stripers (all small) and one nice crappie (see picture)

Rabbi Bruce D. Greenbaum

Now that’s a nice Crappie! Way to go Rabbi Bruce!

Local Angling Report
by Geoff Malloway

Hello, fellow fish heads!

The surf fishing is still the hot topic of most shop conversations.  Tioga Ave., in Sand City, has been a popular spot but so has the beach off Canyon del Rey and beaches north.  Surf perch patterns and the usual patterns associated with striper fishing all work.  Halibut are also showing up so it's a potpourri of angling adventure.   Do be mindful of the bag limits and size restrictions if you plan on taking fish home.

Los Padres Reservoir is still producing trout for those with float tubes and fast-sinking fly lines.

Cross off the Big Sur River as the Pine Ridge Trail is still closed due to fire damage.  The river is in rough shape but if you insist on fishing it, you need to access the upper river via the Gorge Trail…good luck with that.

I have had a few positive reports on the upper Arroyo Seco River so maybe all is not lost.

Finally, Fort Hunter Liggett is hosting maneuvers all month so you'll have to go elsewhere for bass.  It's expected to open back up for the public in July.

Don't forget to apply for your FHL fishing license via the internet…it takes about 2 weeks to get it.

Geoff

Lower Sac Fishout Update:

The fall Lower Sac River trip scheduled for October 26, 27 & 28 is filled!  9 guides are reserved for each of three days.  Some new members filled the last spots.  Thanks to all for the effort.  Alan plans to have a casting/terminology event at the veterans park later this summer.  Alan says it's always fun to see him cast, or try to! haha... :)
