Monterey Peninsula Flycasters’ July 2010 NEWSLETTER

Leonard Laub with a nice ‘cutt’ at the recent trip to Pyramid Lake

President’s Message:

Ooops the picture in the June newsletter wasn't Alan but it was Leonard Laub.  We stand corrected. Our June meeting was lightly attended again.  We concluded that most members were out and about in search of some trout to catch on the fly rod.  The fishing in the kelp is still slow. A lot of kyackers have been out giving it a try. The stripers are in close and the beach casters are having some luck.

Our July meeting will be held at the waste water board room and I hope to see a good turnout with many a tall tale of catching the wonder fish.  We plan to do Pizza for August.

Tight Lines, John Weber

Vice-President’s Message:

The Program for the July meeting will once again be Fishing Reports from those attending.  Surely several of us have been closing out nthe Spring Fishing.

Your VP returned from Cape Cod not with his shield but on it. . Five days of fishing fairly hard resulted in exactly two fish. One was an 18" striper that ate a #2 chartreuse over white Clouser; the other was a ten pound bluefish. The bluefish ate a smallish fly that I won on the fleece last year!! [Hint Hint]

I was actually fishing for stripers, with a 1X tippet. It was a ten minute fight, and I was sure the whole time that the bluefish would bite through the tippet before I could land it. It actually did bite through it just as my nephew gaffed the fish. It was delicious.

Much better luck on the Klamath and Fall rivers. Ned and I fished three days with Craig Nielsen, two on the Klamath and one on the Fall. We caught plenty of fish on both rivers, on both dries and nymphs, including a few large half pounders on dries, and a stretch of fifteen minutes late in the day on the Klamath, where we hooked, played and lost three large rainbows in a row. They just OWNED the 6 weights we were fishing.

and now, off to South Fork  Colorado for the Green Drake hatch on the Rio Grande.

Green Drake hatch started about 24 June. Before that we had to put up with salmonflies, yellow stones and greay drakes. Catching fish. Report later.

Ed Kelleher
VP and SLDO

Businessman gets prison for taking Steelhead trout
The Associated Press
Posted: 05/27/2010 04:50:33 PM PDT

OAKLAND, Calif. A San Francisco businessman will serve time in federal prison after being sentenced twice in the same week on separate convictions. Federal prosecutors say Luke Brugnara was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison for taking steelhead trout and making false statements.

The sentence comes after Brugnara pled guilty in January to blocking a stream on property he owns in Gilroy. Blocking the stream trapped steelhead trout returning from the ocean. Steelhead have been listed as a threatened species in the area since 1997.

In a separate case, Brugnara was sentenced Monday to two and a half years for failing to report real estate profits on his income taxes.

A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office says Brugnara will have to report to prison by Aug. 30, with the sentences to be served concurrently.

Newsletter comments:
Unfortunately, many are not able to open the files I attach in the e-mail distributions. Sorry about that. I will try to copy the newsletters directly into the e-mail, but some of the formatting will be lost. It will be best to view the newsletter here on the web site if & when you can. Also, I already have a working version of the next newsletter uploaded...so you can see in advance what is coming..and I update it real time as I get new information...

***************************************************************
The web site:
If you have any ideas for other things you would like to see on the club web site, please let me know. I’ll admit that I am by no means a web developer guru. I am using a simple program with my Mac that builds all the code for me, and the program is limited in what is it capable of doing.

Library:
How many people know we have a pretty good Library? That’s right. Apparently this was a good discussion at the Feb Board meeting. Go here to see a listing of what the club has... We’ll be improving the information there soon with reviews from other club members! Check back often, and check something out and write your own review and share your thoughts with other club members.

What is that ‘sheep skin’ you see on the raffle table at the club meetings?
Answer: It’s a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, members donate flies to it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January.

The fly collection is growing, but we still need loads more. I encourage you all to donate some each month, even if it’s only 1 or 2. Just think what a nice collection we would have by the time the annual raffle rolls around!

Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece.
