Monterey Peninsula Flycasters’ June 2009 NEWSLETTER

John on a recent Lower Sac fishout, probably saying to himself, “Come-On already, let’s go fishing!”

President’s Message:
By John Weber

Our May 5 meeting was attended quit well.  We had 16 people show up.  Michael made a great description of the program given by Ed Kelleher.  I enjoyed seeing all of the different kinds of trout that are native to the state. Our business meeting officially elected Michael Matica as our new Newsletter editor and Secretary.  He has also straightened out our web site.  If you go to the old site it will refer you to the new one.  Hope to see you at the June 2 meeting.  Bring your fish stories and pictures.  See you then, unless you are off somewhere fishing.

Tight lines, John Weber

Vice-President’s Message:
By Ed Kelleher

Tentatively, our program for June will be a showing of a DVD that was shot primarily at Kelsey Bass Ranch, featuring Ken Hanley and Jay Murakoshi. The title is “BASS BLAST”, and, if you haven’t already guessed, it’s about fishing for bass.

On behalf of the entire club, I would again like to extend our sincerest thanks to Tom for doing such a great job with the newsletter for so long. Newsletter comments:
Unfortunately, many were not able to open the files I attached in the e-mail distribution of the last newsletter. Sorry about that. In all honesty, it’s probably because I am using a Mac. I will try to copy the newsletters directly into an e-mail from now on, but some of the formatting will be lost. It will be best to view the newsletter here on the web site if & when you can. Also, I already have a working version of the next newsletter uploaded...so you can see in advance what is coming..and I update it real time as I get new information...

***************************************************************
The web site:
The new site is now active and linked/redirected from the old location to this one. So far, all feedback about the new web site has been positive, everyone seems to like the new format. My thanks to all who have contacted to me.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Any and all feedback is most welcome. If you have any ideas for other things you would like to see on the club web site, please let me know. I’ll admit that I am by no means a web developer guru. I am using a simple program with my Mac that builds all the code for me, and the program is limited in what is it capable of doing. The location may be moving again in the future, more on that later.

What’s New?

I’ve added a few HTML ‘snippets’ (Moon Phases, Current weather conditions for Monterey, and a Satellite Image of the Western US. Hope you like them! You’ll find them in a few places.

Important News...

I borrowed this article from the Santa Cruz Fly Fisherman’s April 2009 newsletter. It’s good information we all need to be aware of...
***************************************************************
These Boots Were Made for Fly Fishing
By Troy Mayers

Most of us have felt soles on the bottom of our wading boots. For a few good reasons we should start to think about replacing or repairing our old sidekicks. Please pick two reasons, Safety, Conservation or Good Looks.
Recently Trout Unlimited has sent out a recommendation of "No felt soles for 2011". Manufacturers such as Patagonia, Simms and others have introduced new models with softer rubber soles for Safety reasons, better traction in and out of the water. The Conservation reason would be "Risk Reduction of Invasive Species". Research has proven that felt soles are capable of moving a variety of problem organisms from river to river. Our own San Lorenzo River has recently picked up New Zealand Mud Snails.

Another option, replace your felt soles with rubber. I recently sent my boots to Rocky Mountain Resole of Colorado, www.rmresole.com. Within 10 days my boots returned with new Simms Aqua Stealth rubber bottoms, costing only $45.00 plus shipping. They have recently been running a special for $ 40.00. There are even studded options. There may be a local resource that I am unaware of (please use it). Their sale says it runs until the end of March, but I contacted them and explained that this article probably wouldn't get to our members in time for them to take advantage of the special deal, so they generously extended the sale until May 31st. All any MPFC member needs to do to get the deal is let them know you belong to our club. Nice!

What you should be doing with your felt soles now? Between traveling from river to river, your felt soles should be dried out and or cleaned after each use. For more information on the treatment and other conservation issues contact Trout Unlimited, www.tu.org. Click on Science and Aquatic Invasive Species.

What was that ‘skin’ you saw on the raffle table at the last meeting?
Answer: It was a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, we place flies on it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January.

Quite a few flies were added at the last meeting. Let’s keep that trend going...

Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece.

The MPFC Club Monthly Meeting:

When:
The Monterey Peninsula Flycasters Club (MPFC) meets the 1st Tuesday of every month at 7PM.

Where:
The meetings are held at the Waste Water Management Facility located at:
3945 Rio Road
Carmel, CA 93923

Directions:
Coming down Highway 1, turn left onto Rio Road, proceed past the shopping centers and the post office. The building is about one half block past the Post Office and Rancho Road. The driveway is on the left and the parking lot is in the rear. See the map below.

What goes on at the meeting?
We have presenters when the club budget allows. At the April meeting we had an awesome program about fishing in the surf presented by Robert Ketley. The presentation was very well received. In May, our very own VP, Ed Kelleher presented a program on CA Heritage Trout.

We also have a monthly raffle where you could win flies, fly lines, articles of clothing, leaders, tippet materials, etc, and sometimes even a brand new fly rod (one can never have enough fly rods!, I know I can’t). The money collected from the raffle is used to cover club expenses such as program speakers, and future raffle prizes...so buy lots of raffle tickets and support the club and help Ed bring in more speakers!.

Board of Directors Meeting:

The Board of Directors meeting starts at 6:30, 30 minutes prior to the general meeting, every month, at the same location.

All members are invited and welcome.

Fishing Reports:

Been fishing lately? I have! Stacey (the River Queen) and I joined some friends to fish Roostercomb Ranch over the first weekend in May. Roostercomb is a privately owned cattle ranch ~30 miles back in the hills behind Henry Coe park off HW 152 with 8~10 ponds loaded with Largemouth Bass and Bluegills. Although the weather wasn’t very cooperative, overcast almost the entire time, and often raining, we still managed to catch some fish.

Stacey (the River Queen) with her first ever bass on a fly!

Just before we headed back to the ranch house to pack up and leave on the last day, we saw a bunch of Damsels climbing out of the water...
This is a great shot.

Lower Sac Fishout Update:

The fall Lower Sac River trip scheduled for October 26, 27 & 28 is filled!  9 guides are reserved for each of three days.  Some new members filled the last spots.  Thanks to all for the effort.  Alan plans to have a casting/terminology event at the veterans park later this summer.  Alan says it's always fun to see him cast, or try to! haha... :)

July through August is a great time on Fall River & the Lower Sacramento!!!
Sure it can be hot, but to me heat = good trout fishing!  Local secret: The Lower Sacramento offers great trout fishing in mid July through August.  I keep telling folks and the ones that come discover that I'm not just trying to sell a trip, I'm tying to steer folks toward some good fishing when I know I can find it! On any hot day in August, I find the retail staff from The Fly Shop plying the river in town for rising trout in the evenings. That should tell you somthing.  A day on the Sac in mid July or August can start around 8:00 AM, fish until 1:00 PM, get off the river and enjoy lunch indoors, then head out around 3:00 and fish the evening hatch.  Or, we can meet at 9:00 AM and just stay out and fish all day!  The fishing can be really good from 11:00AM-4:30PM.  August is a great option for your specially priced day on the Sac!

Fall River is just so underestimated in August!  August offers good hatches of PMD's, caddis, calibaetis and damsel flies.  What about July?  Well, Fall River is a very popular river in July because of the Hex hatch, not to mention other local rivers fish well through July, but they tend to tapper off by August, but Fall thrives through August and even September.  The whole river is evenly populated with 16-18" rainbows and fish over 20" are common.  The afternoon breeze can keep daytime temps comfortable, or we just get off the river for an hour or two, get somthing to eat, and go out for the late afternoon/early evening.  A day on Fall River is $360.00 for one or two anglers.  Lunch/drinks included.  Ask for the package deal and I supply flies, rods, reels and tackle.

Hat Creek Report!

Salmon Flies are hatching, hanging out on branches and dropping in the water where big browns reside and eat...our salmon fly dries!!  Use a long leader and drift your salmon fly dry under over hanging branches and watch for the grab.  It's happening now! Anglers can try this with 2x or 3x tippet, but I lean towards 4x,5x and an abrupt stopping of the rod on the forward cast to get the best presentation!

McCloud River Report

River flows are good and the warm weather has brought the caddis & mayflies out.  Haven't seen any stones yet.  The fishing is good. Brown rubber legs, #16 hares ears nymphs, #16-18 PT nymphs worked.  Some fish ate #8 stimulators.  Not very crowded, but once the word is out...that will change.  This river will be a good choice for weeks to come.

Looking forward to fishing with you!
