Monterey Peninsula Flycasters’ June 2010 NEWSLETTER

Leonard Laub with a nice ‘cutt’ at the recent trip to Pyramid Lake

President’s Message:

Our May meeting was lightly attended again.  Bill was sick so we had no raffle.  Konie was up in Oregon.  Our presentation by Bill Kelley from the Fish and Game department was outstanding.  He filled us in on all the things wardens do other than giving out citations.  They lead an interesting life.  I recommend you come to our meetings at the Waste Water Board Room and catch up on the fantastic information that comes forth from your fellow Fly Casters.  See you June 1 at 7:00 P.M...

Tight Lines, John Weber

Vice-President’s Message:

The June program will consist of fishing reports from those members who are present and have been fishing. We should expect at least a Green River report from Tom Pelikan if he is not dispensing drugs that night. Rumor has it that he caught a very large rainbow in the snow there.

Your VP just returned from the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia, fishing with an old friend from graduate school. I caught 96 fish in six days, mostly trout. Small brookies from creeks a quarter  the size of the Little Sur at the Scout Camp; fall fish from everywhere; one smallmouth, four rock bass [red eye], two decent brown trout  plus a dozen plus rainbows from nine to twenty inches [almost all over 13 inches] from Dunlap Creek at Escatawba Farms; and a thirty fish day on the WalkDownHill River: thirteen rainbows, all over 13 inches, three brook trout, 12,13 and 14 inches, and a bunch of 9 inch fall fish, rock bass and the smallmouth.  Also got one bluegill and three rock bass on the South River, trying to stir up some smallmouth. My buddy, who teaches at VMI, did better than I did on the creeks and the South River, I did better on the WalkDownHill and Sherman Creek. We tried Otter Creek twice, but it was the color of a coffee milkshake both days, as was the North River the one day we looked at it before heading for a creek.  Prizes of the trip were a twenty inch rainbow plus the fifteen and sixteen inch browns from Dunlap Creek,  and a really fat eighteen inch rainbow from WalkDownHill River, after a bunch of fifteeners.

On the day of the June Meeting, I will be fishing on Cape Cod for stripers and blue fish. Report to follow.

Newsletter comments:
Unfortunately, many are not able to open the files I attach in the e-mail distributions. Sorry about that. I will try to copy the newsletters directly into the e-mail, but some of the formatting will be lost. It will be best to view the newsletter here on the web site if & when you can. Also, I already have a working version of the next newsletter uploaded...so you can see in advance what is coming..and I update it real time as I get new information...

***************************************************************
The web site:
If you have any ideas for other things you would like to see on the club web site, please let me know. I’ll admit that I am by no means a web developer guru. I am using a simple program with my Mac that builds all the code for me, and the program is limited in what is it capable of doing.

Library:
How many people know we have a pretty good Library? That’s right. Apparently this was a good discussion at the Feb Board meeting. Go here to see a listing of what the club has... We’ll be improving the information there soon with reviews from other club members! Check back often, and check something out and write your own review and share your thoughts with other club members.

What is that ‘sheep skin’ you see on the raffle table at the club meetings?
Answer: It’s a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, members donate flies to it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January.

The fly collection is growing, but we still need loads more. I encourage you all to donate some each month, even if it’s only 1 or 2. Just think what a nice collection we would have by the time the annual raffle rolls around!

Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece.
