President’s Message:

If you missed the April meeting, you missed a fantastic presentation by Chris Parsons featuring the Fall River, the ultimate spring creek water for fly fishing in Northern California. He even presented a free guided trip to the raffle. One thing was made very clear before the drawing of tickets took place...Koney COULD NOT win this one! :) Koney does a good job of calling out the winning numbers for Bill Lauster.   Bill told me the larger group really boosted our income from the raffle.

There were about 25 people there and several new members joined up. The facility provided by the Sally Judd Griffin Senior Center was all set up and a large screen was made available for the show. I'm sure the board will approve using this great meeting place again.

Our May 4th meeting will take place in our old digs at the Waste Water Center on Rio Road.   I will have a Salmon Report and the Rock Cod season should begin the weekend before the meeting.

Tight lines

Vice-President’s Message:

May Program Features Legendary North Coast Game Warden

The program for May is a presentation by a well known Game Warden, raconteur and man about the outdoors.  Our speaker is Patrol Lieutenant Don Kelly, of the California Department of Fish and Game, Monterey office. His topic is: "Life as a Game Warden: What it's REALLY Like Out There" or "Coping with Armed Maniacs and Other Poachers"

Don has been with the Department of Fish and Game long enough to rise the rank of Patrol Lieutenant, and has served in enough locations to be able to serve in the North Coast District, of which we are apparently a part.

He was born at a very early age to poor but Irish parents, at least one of whom was possibly named Kelly.  Unable to find honest work as a hod carrier, he joined the Department of Fish and Game at some time or another, and the world has been just about the same as before ever since.

The presentation bids well to be very interesting, as Don has been known to exhibit a brogue as broad as your Vice President's brogue after a Guinness or twelve; and has a large fund of scurrilous Irish jokes, in addition to his tales of derring do in the great outdoors.

What is that ‘sheep skin’ you see on the raffle table at the club meetings?
Answer: It’s a fleece. The fleece is sort of a tradition with our club. Throughout the year, members donate flies to it which are raffled off at the annual dinner in January.

The fly collection is growing, but we still need loads more. I encourage you all to donate some each month, even if it’s only 1 or 2. Just think what a nice collection we would have by the time the annual raffle rolls around!

Do you tie your own flies, consider bringing some to the meeting and donating them. It’s fun to watch the collection of flies increase over the coarse of the year leading up to the annual dinner. Have some extras? Feel really generous? How about doing 2 nice things? Visit Geoff Malloway at Central Coast FlyFishing, buy a fly (or 2, 3, 5… ) and donate them to the fleece.

Fishing Reports:

MPFC Fishout to Pyramid Lake

Having filed my automatic extension for income taxes on Monday, 12 April, I went to Sutcliffe NV with some friends on the 15th. Fished Pyramid Lake Thurs afternoon, all day Friday and Sat with Leonard Laub and Doug Leach. We started Fri-Sat at 0545, fished til noon, took a lunch/nap break, fished til dark.

We fished Pelican Beach Thurs PM, and Fri AM, I got one nice fish Thurs, one other got a Cui Ui, one got skunked. The Sofa Rock just south of Pelican Beach was fully occupied every time we looked at it. Never did get to fish it.

I got this guy about 1700 Thursday, right after we started. He ate a white / chartreuse beetle on a dropper ahead of a sparkle black bugger.

We started Friday at Pelican Beach again. To our surprise, there was lots of room at 0545. Hangovers, I suppose. The other two guys got a very few at Pelican; I got zip.

Then, about 9 AM, we drove north and tried Warrior Point, no fish. After lunch and a nap [??] we tried the old 'Slime Beach' [large slimy clay deposits at former waters edge] I got two late in the day, others got several each. It was occupied but not very crowded. We took a look at South Beach, and it was pretty well occupied at 3 PM. The fishing suffered some from lots of sun and too little wind, and what there was mostly from the east.

Sat AM: Started at Slime Point 0545: no wind to speak of, dead slow, drove to South Beach [3/4 mile south of Slime], no action; Washout Beach - no action; lunch and nap, cove south of Washout Beach, no action; back to South Beach - got a few, I managed one about 1800.

All the usual flies worked as well as anything else that I tried: #14 Red FB Copper John; Sparkly Black Wooly Bugger, White over Chartreuse beetle/tadpole. Lots of chases and missed strikes.

Turns out the switch rod Dennis Papike built for me is pretty good at slinging a bobber long distances [for me] single handed. I caught all four [WHOOPEE!!!!] fish on rods he built.

Pelican Beach was wall to wall by Friday noon.

Saturday was so tough, that at South Beach at 1800, the ONLY ones on the beach, were the three off us, Greg Sano and his buddy Ernie. Even Greg was having a slow day. He hung it up at 8:00 PM. I can take a hint like that - I reeled up and went in.

Sunday morning as we left, the lake looked like a mirror, and again, at 0900, Greg and Ernie were the only ones fishing at South Beach.

The food was good, but not up to Charlie's standards. Wine was missing, but there was more whiskey than was healthy for some.

We got home late afternoon Sunday, a bit frustrated; except for me. That is my biggest trout ever, regardless of species or continent. I'll take it!!

Galveston Trip: 25 March to 5 April 2010

Supposed to fish Galveston Bay West Sunday-Mon mar 28-29 with Richard Hinds and Guide Steve Soule'. Blowing like hell Fri-Sat so Sun called off. Fished Monday, both from boat and wading - saw one redfish and one sheepshead - no casts.

Nothing on blind casting except guide got one small croaker. Guide offered Wed afternoon half day at cut rate since fishing so poor. Richard had to work but I accepted, Fished Moses Lake/Dollar Bay in Texas City. Blowing hard again. I got about an hour of fly casting, the rest was spinning or nothing. we were blind casting wiggle tails. Guide hooked three fish and after some discussion, I landed two of them, just so I'd remember what a fish felt like. All three were legal keepers. We kept none.

Supposed to fish down by Port Lavaca Fri/Sat with Richard and Guide Scott Sommerlatte.  Thursday forecast for Fri was ugly, so again we cancelled. Guide was also just back from Everglades, fishing and guiding.

Fished Saturday in the southwest corner of the peninsula that Port O'Connor and Seadrift are on, back in the marshes.  Stayed in the Captain's Quarters Motel in Seadrift. Spartan but roomy and clean - no coffee in rooms but they had a breakfast room with muffins, bagels and coffee. Fished; started about 8 fished until almost 4, lots of fair chances, and a few good chances. Richard hooked two and landed one, I hooked one and landed it.

Lots of missed opportunities. I learned that I am not as good a quick caster as I would have thought. "9  o'clock, 30 feet, swimming left" Cast is at 10 o.clock 25 feet, missing or at 8 o'clock 40 feet, lining him. Practice needed.

Guide was born and brought up local, did a 5 yr Coast Guard tour in Freeport TX, knows the marshes extremely well. EASY place to get lost.
